This was a reminder about the end time prophecy that there will be severe natural disasters.
It also sounded the constant bell that man always relate all this natural problem to God.
Was it His response to what the Chileans or Haitian's sins or acts that incurred the wrath's of God.
In the Bible, when man sinned and God's punishment include, earth's opening to swallow those who challenge his authority, we also read about fire from heaven and of course the great flood that wiped out all but 8 persons.
But does that mean when we are strucked with natural disaster it is the "hand of God".
The example of Job was shared at one Sunday school session . The background to that is that
when God made Adam and Eve and complete creation, Satan was also created by then and fallen by the time we reached Job. So after Satan fall , he still could go to the presence of God and thus became the accuser of Job. With permission from God, Satan caused Sabeans and Chaldeans to raid Job's wealth and also fire to destroy his goods. Satan even smoted Job with sores and sufferings. There we have it, Satan may be behind some of these calamities, after all he is the prince of this world and control the mind of unbelievers.
So don't blame God, look at yourself and there is the evil one lurking to accuse.
